Sniper Hog Lights Hunt..

Huge thank you to our friends at Sniper Hog Lights for an awesome weekend in beautiful South Texas!

Joe prepared an awesome meal!

Some Pork, Elk, and Veggies. Yum!

Then Kenan and I spent some time practicing with our bows. This was my first time ever shooting my compound bow and I think I may be addicted now.

Nice set up boys!

Of course I had to hook Joe up with some Pink Zebra.

Off to the lease…

And we wait.. decided to go with my .308. We named her “Death”.

Unfortunately we didn’t see any pigs just a squirrel and a opossum but that’s ok. Definitely a fun day/night and will be going again soon.

Until then I’ll keep practicing my archery skills until I become a #badassbowhuntress 😉

When Copperheads Bite…

County living is something that my family and I have grown to love.  The only noises at night we hear are the long distant howls of coyotes and the musical rhythm of insects.  Along with the simple quiet life we have grown to love, we’ve also had to learn to live with it’s not so pleasant perks.  Raccoons, foxes, opossums, and snakes.. Copperheads are highly common out here.

In April of 2013, shortly after we moved out to this land, I was bit by a baby copperhead only 10″ long on my left hand.  5 days in the hospital, anti-venom (cro-fab) with a night in ICU.  I’ve learned to be careful out here.  Taken in every free cat or kitten available, bought some chickens, and cleared the land as best as we could keep it.  Since then we have only found one copperhead.. he didn’t make it very far.  My youngest son found him and stopped his sister from picking up a ball that landed right by him..

2014 Find

2014 Find

May of 2015 was a wet month!  We ended up with over 20″ of rain here is South Texas.  Flooding was major and lives were lost due to this excessive downfall.  This flood water stirred animals of all sorts up.  Dogs, cats, turtles, and snakes were all looking for higher ground.  The first week of June the rain stopped.  The ground was wet and the grass was high property wide.  Good ole Betsy our tractor was fired up and ready to go.  For a week, we shredded the land.  We were all aware that snakes would be lurking.

June 11th I was outside picking up trash and other debris that had floated around for a month.. 3 feet from our house I found a copperhead curled up in a striking position.  I hollered at a child to grab my shovel and quickly sent the other 4 kids inside.  I lean in and chop his head off….then I felt the sharpest burning pain in my foot I had ever felt.  Yup, dummy me.  There were TWO snakes!! I just killed the little ones mate.  Big momma in all her beautiful copper color nailed my big toe with a pain that about brought me to my knees. Adrenaline kicked in and I was able to get both snakes in a giant tub. Big Momma was one of largest Copperheads I have ever seen.  She was every bit of 2 foot and nice size around..

I knew the drill, I had done this before.  When being bit by a snake, it is important to take the dead snake with you in a secure closure to the ER for verification of species.  Both copperheads to a trip with me to the ER this time.  The ER staff remembered me… some jokes were made but the pain was too intense for me to be bothered.  This time I was not given anti-venom.  Since I had received it the previous time, my chance of a serious allergic reaction outweighed the effects of the copperhead bite.  Pain management and monitoring of the leg/foot.

After 5 days I was released from the hospital.  I cannot describe how bad this dang bite hurt. I have given birth 3 times, had about 6 root canals… this was in the top of the pain scale.  These little snakes mean business when the do inject you with venom…

3 weeks of recovery and I am almost 100% back to normal.  I must admit, I haven’t been outside much lately. Which is sad. I’ve become a little overly paranoid about snakes now.

I’m happy to be back up, active, blogging, and working my Pink Zebra business full time again.  The normal everyday life is something I craved while being held up in bed or on the couch with my leg in the air..

Be safe out there, know which snakes are in your area, what to look for and remember..copperheads are companion snakes.. where there is one, there are other.. sometimes right in front of you!

Here’s the progression of my first week after being bitten.

Copperhead Bite - South Texas

Day 2 - As you can see swelling has reached the upper leg.

Day 2 – As you can see swelling has reached the upper leg.

Day 4 - Swelling in leg has started to reduce... Swelling localized in lower calf and foot..

Day 4 – Swelling in leg has started to reduce… Swelling localized in lower calf and foot..

After 7 days, the swelling had gone down considerably and after 14 days, only mild swelling.  Recovery was difficult on me physically.  I’m still recovering as I write this.  I get very short winded and tire easily.  Maybe my body is still fighting out the venom or I am just that out of shape.. Maybe both…

Glad to be back in the land of the living!!

Dreams – Helping Horses – Helping People

I love them! I would live in a barn with as many as I could, if finances allowed. It’s a passion of mine. Passion is a driving force for the soul. My dream is to one day make enough money with Pink Zebra to open a rescue program in our area. Equestrian therapy, helping the community with jobs, I could go on and on about my dreams and future plans. Helping horses, helping people. Well that just screams heaven on earth to me.

My nephew Devin suffers from a rare genetic disease known as PMD. He is and always will be wheelchair bound. The thought of putting him on a horse and giving him the legs he does not have drives me. One day it will happen. My reasons why are big enough.

I got to talk to this special little man on the phone yesterday! My heart broke and soared at the same time. I snuffed back tears. We have not seen each other since 2011. The miles keep us apart only physically. This young man holds a special place in my heart that not many understand. I was the first to find out my sister was pregnant with him. He was my first nephew. He made me an aunt.

So, I was digging through some old photos and found some pictures of my favorite horses.  Our Honey was our first rescue horse. Her spirit could not be matched. Her love and affection for my children shined through her abuse from day one.  Unfortunately all we could do was give her the best life she could have until she took her final breath.

Here’s our beloved Honey with our second oldest daughter. Honey loved having the kids on her back. It was her purpose.

My favorite horse I’ve ever owned was Axel. I named him after Axel Rose.. For all you G&R lovers out there. Lol

He was the first horse I ever bonded with. Now if you have ever bonded with an animal you know the feeling.. Bonding with this horse did something to me. I will always be connected to him. He was the one who let me cry my river of tears into his mane when my mom died. He was the first to show me what earning a horses trust and respect meant.  The day we sold him, my heart shattered. Thankfully I sold him to friends, so I can visit him. It’s still too hard though. I miss him so much.

My bond with Sky is different. She respects me as her herd leader, but she can never take the place of that baby boy who I love so dearly.  Sky has a much wilder spirit than Axel. She is a beautiful animal and great companion. My love for her will last forever. She’s very strong willed!!

I’m all out of order here… Maybe lack of sleep! The first horse we ever owned was Bailey. She LOVED the kids and food. Lots of food. We miss her too. She went to a good home and is still being enjoyed by children. I’m sure this makes her happy!!

Whitetail Season – A Family Favorite

Yesterday was a very exciting day for all around our family.  Since moving to the country a couple of years ago, we have always been able to maintain a freezer full of venison.  Thank God! This is a big savings at the grocery store.  More than just the expense it saves us, we really enjoyed the time together as a family preparing for hunting season and cold/mornings waiting for our next freezer full of meat to walk out of the woods.

Our schedules around here have been a little insane lately.  Kenan with his new job and me with my full time job of kids, home schooling, events, and Pink Zebra.  We were actually starting to wonder if we were going to be able to take a buck this year or wait for youth weekend for our oldest daughter to harvest a doe for us.

Mid morning yesterday a cold front blew in.  Now to any hunter you know what a cold front brings, frisky deer.  I ran and threw some extra corn out with a special “seasoning” that drives deer nuts.  Then we waited.

About 2 hours later out walks a nice buck.  Kenan grabs his .308 and the kids and I prepare for the gunshot.  Kenan calls his hand me down rifle from his grandfather, Death becomes Her.  She is one of the oldest yet most accurate guns in our collection.  Kenan just doesn’t have the heart to retire her yet..

white tail buck texas

This buck should clearly be an 8 pointer! Look at the length on those G2s. Our buck population around here has a genetic link of not having brow tines.  Very new and strange to me.  The buck our oldest daughter shot last season was similar to this one.

Here’s Hailee’s buck from last year.

2013 Harvest

2013 Harvest

Well, brow tines or not, we thankfully have meat for our freezer.  We might take a doe during youth or a spike if the opportunity presents himself.. lol.  We love venison stew, fried back strap, back strap bacon wraps, and of course we love to make sausage.  We need some hogs to come out and play now!  We prefer a 60/40 hog/deer ratio in our sausage.

CAUTION:

If you have a weak stomach, please to do not look at the picture below.

This is house the hubby and I spent our evening yesterday.

Cleaning a Buck

Yeah that’s me holding the guts in while Kenan gets through the rib cage.  Not the most fantastic smell in the world but hey, whatever puts meat on the table and it’s doesn’t get any more organic than this!

After a tiring evening the children invaded my space and we watched a movie together.

Hello! Leave me some room!

Hello! Leave me some room!

Our doe herd came back this morning. We have a doe that dropped twins earlier this year.  We can now tell that one is a doe and the other a button buck.  I look forward to watching him grow.

Springtime at the Farm! Meet our New Horse!

The month of April has brought new beginnings to our life.  There is something about Spring that has always helped me out of the winter blues, so to speak.  More time outside with family and friends, sunshine to soak up, and time to just lay down outside and surrender all to God.  The land is turning greener by the day!

This Spring has been extra special for us.  We have a few new additions to our family.  As I have posted before, we had to put our Welsh Pony down last month.  That was difficult.   I had a bit of what you would call “empty nest” or “empty stall” in my case.  Kenan blessed me with a new horse!

Meet Sky –

Sky Paint Horse

Sky is an 11 year old Paint mare.  She is beautiful, full of energy, and has a personality that is just amazing!  Of course she’s a mare so she tends to be a little “moody” at times.  But what female isn’t! LOL! I know I have my moments. Shocker right?!  She has made such a huge impact on our family in such a short time.

Sky

The children and I have spent hours looking at her markings.  We think Paint horses are like clouds.  You always see something different every time you look at them.   It’s been a nice escape from reality on stressful days.

Paint Mare

She’s been very fun to ride.  She’s had a little attitude from time to time. She’s trying to see just how far she can push me.   Establishing dominance and trust with her has been very easy.

Sky and myself on an afternoon ride. My view!

Horse ViewThe best seat in the world! In my opinioI prefer riding bitless.  She’s taken a snaffle bit well but for just trotting around the land and down the road, her halter is all I need.  She’s a good girl.

The kids are in love with her!  We’ve taken it slow letting them ride since everything is still new to her.  But here’s a couple pics of my babies on her.  She’s done amazing!

This is Ethan and Allison riding together.  As you can tell by the look on their faces, I think it’s safe to say they’re enjoying her.

Kids on horse WP_20140404_19_21_03_Pro WP_20140404_19_24_41_Pro

Hailee is still a little nervous on her.  So we are taking it slow and retraining Hailee how to ride.  She was thrown off our gelding a couple years ago. But Hailee always gets back up! Proud of her!

And just like any child (horse) as soon as she gets a bath…

Horse Rolling

We’re also expanding our flock of chickens!!!

Baby Chicks

I know, you just said… awww!

I also have a shipment of Australorps coming in tomorrow!  I had to order them from a hatchery.  Australorps are amazing egg producers. Can you say, YUM!?

We currently have 2 roosters.  Our big Production Red’s name is Cujo. We also have a little Bantam rooster named, Ferb.  Ferb thinks he’s in charge but every now and then Cujo puts him in his place, or visa versa.  My oldest daughter snapped a picture of the “chicken dance”.

I hope Spring has brought many new beginnings to you and yours.  I’d love to hear from you!

God Bless,

Emily

Honey Bees!!

Kenan and I have been researching honey bees for a while now.  The benefits of raw honey alone are amazing for health. Whether you eat it or use it topically the uses are limitless!  Kenan suffers from seasonal allergies. He gets a couple of shots a year if not more. While looking for more natural alternatives to allergy meds and steroid shots.  My sister-in-law, Kara, over at Home With Purpose told us about her research and use of local raw honey.

We were hooked!

Since moving out to the country, bees have been on our top 10 list of things we NEED!   Some of our children’s friends and cousins stumbled upon a beehive in a tree in the back of the property.  Very sweet bees.  I would not recommend trying to play with them like I did.   I didn’t get stung but still, probably not a smart move for this novice bee “keeper”.

Here lately we’ve seen an increase in bee activity around the house.

We were given a chicken feeder by some of our good friends. It’s a yard feeder that holds a 50# bag of chicken feed.  The girls don’t eat much scratch or pellets though.  They prefer to free range, which makes our eggs taste delicious!!

We noticed that for some reason all of the chicken feed was getting drug out of the feeder and on the ground.  Odd, I thought, I dumped the feeder thinking that maybe it was just a bad batch or had held moisture from our rain a few weeks back.  I picked up another bag of feed, filled the feeder.  Within an hour I went back outside and the SAME thing had happened! Feed was everywhere BUT this time, I found the culprits in action!

Bees at our Chicken Feeder!

The next day I went over to my friend Angi’s house. Her family keeps bees and does bee removal.  I was given a Honey Bee 101 course.  Aren’t I cute?

Geared up for a feeding!

Geared up for a feeding!

I learned a lot from my friends that day.  Go check out Angi’s blog for more info on their adventures in bee keeping!

The next day I made bee food.  Sugar, water, and honey! Easy enough for this lady!  And the bee feeder? It’s an old dog food bowl with sticks in it.  The sticks float so the bees can land on them, eat, and not drown. (I had a DUH moment with my friend, Gabriel told me this.)  Simple AND easy!

So here’s a few pics of our “pet” bees. lol!

Meet the Animals (Country Living)

We’ve been living in the country for a little over a year now.  My in laws purchased 23 acres last year and we moved shortly there after.  Kenan and I love the country.  We enjoy the peace and quiet.  Waking up with whitetail deer at the feeder, Listening to the rooster crow. We like it. It’s what we love.  You should see the sky at night.  Reminds me of a song. “The stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas.”

Let me introduce you to some of our “family members”.  They are furry and feathered.  We love them just the same.

Cats… Cat’s are essential to the farm life we are building.  They hunt rodents and keep the snakes away.  Even though most of the time they are asleep somewhere in the house.  We’ve only seen a couple of snakes since I was bit last April by a Copperhead.  I’ll have to post about that one day. Not fun!  I think the cats, for the most part are doing their job.

Meet the feline team…

WP_20131022_029    This is Sam or Sammy as we call him.  He’s the cat that thinks I need to wake up when the sun comes up every morning.  Yeah, he’s one of those.

WP_20131022_016    Dean is our black “Halloween” cat.

Ringo is our fat, lazy cat.  I’m sure he hunts when I’m not looking though.

WP_20130720_030   Meet our mighty warrior, Cass.  He is defender of the chickens.  Super cat among his friends.

So now that you have met the cats..

Let me introduce you to THE DOG.  Yeah, we call Ruger the dog because he’s the last man standing.  We recently had to give away 3 of our other dogs because they would not stop killing our chickens.  And yes we tried every trick and tip in the book.  Didn’t help.  When an animal keeps killing a source of your food and costing you money.  Time to make other arrangements.  Some dogs can be trained to keep away from the chickens, Ruger was.

Here’s what Ruger does 90% of the day.

IPhone Pics 229

Ruger will be 5 on October 29th.  He’s been a great dog and he is very loyal to me.  I’ve never seen a dog play fetch like this one does.  One day I’m going to have to measure how high he can jump.  He’s my first Border Collie and I adore him.

On to the ladies of the farm.

WP_20130720_033   We have 10 free range chickens.  8 are hens.  These ladies product 40 delicious beautiful large eggs every week.

They are hilarious to watch when they are chasing bugs.  My 4 year old son gets a big kick out of it.

WP_20130321_002

It’s hard to believe they were ever this small.  I know, you just went awww.

I’ll have to snap some better shots of our two roosters.  On the left we have Cujo. He just came of age and is showing signs of being a great leader.

On our right we have Ferb (my son named him) Ferb has little man syndrome.  He really, really, likes to crow.  And as you can see, he checks my car for bugs on a regular basis.

WP_20131022_022

WP_20131022_034

I’ve always wanted chickens.  We have a lot to still learn about them but they have been so beneficial to our family.  The health benefits of fresh farm eggs vs store bought eggs are amazing.

You can check out my friend, Angi, over at Schneider Peeps.  She has taught me so much about chickens!

chickens

I’ve posted before about our rescue horse, Honey.  We’ve had her about 6 weeks now.   She’s looking a lot better although she needs a little more exercise in her routine.

WP_20131022_007  She’s starting to get her winter coat.  And it’s about time for her worming.  Y’all pray for me. She does not like to take her medicine.  I gave her some vitamins with B-12.  I think I more ended up on me than in her mouth.  Mares…

WP_20131022_013  She’s such a sweet girl!  And her hair is hilarious! I tried to make her into a unicorn one day. My husband didn’t think it was funny.

And my husband’s favorite part of living out in the country would be….HUNTING!

Last year was my oldest daughters and my first year to “officially” hunt.  We’ve gone with my husband before but that was about it.

First deer of the season.  We had this guy cleaned and in the ice chest before Kenan had to leave for work that morning.

WP_20121204_002

Next up! My first buck ever! Yay me!  If you know anything about hunting, then you know about spikes.  He needed to be taken out of the gene pool.  My husband tells me I did great! Although the guys later asked if I was going to use his spikes for toothpicks.. Men!  And for you pro hunters out there, yes I had to throw out one of the front quarters.  I didn’t realize how much damage a 30-30  can actually do.

WP_20121214_010

After lots of practice and training.  Hailee proved that she knew her way around a rifle and was a consistent shot. During youth season, Hailee took out her first deer ever.  Let me tell you, she was HEAVY!

WP_20130118_033

I can’t wait until we make sausage again after hunting season this year.  We missed out on it earlier this year due to my mom’s passing.  So we should have quite a bit of sausage this year.

And I have my eyes open for this guy.   We named him Flicka.  He wasn’t legal last year but he has a beautiful rack.  We’ve seen him a time or two earlier this year while he was still in velvet.  Gave me “buck fever” just seeing him with his bachelor group.

WP_20130103_001

Here’s a pic of our “backyard”. I’ll post more later.
